This is the Qualifying stage of the institute and is open to HND, BSc, MSc, or PhD holders in Geography and other related fields in Geography only. Members in this category are referred to as Chartered Geographers. Membership is solely by examination for candidates with less than four years of cognate experience in geography or its allied fields. To become Qualified, the candidate must pass the institute’s professional examinations in three stages, viz: PE I, PE II, PE III. Examinations for these levels are conducted by experts in Geography and marked by them. Examinations are held in early December every year in all the state capitals and the FCT. Those with a graduate diploma have an advantage at this level, as they are allowed to start their professional careers from PE I-III with no further charges. Candidates from the Nigerian School of Aviation and Maritime Academics are allowed to enroll directly into the Qualifying stages. Qualified candidates are expected to attend our quarterly induction programs organized by the institute for young Chartered geographers and those in the graduate diploma and fellowship cadres, to be held by rotation each year. Members shall use ACG after their name, meaning Associate Chartered Geographer.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
To become a Chartered Geographer, a candidate must sit for the Institute professional examination stages (I), (II) & (III).
- HND, B.Sc, B.Ed, M.Sc, PhD in Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Surveying, Cartography, Environmental Science, Geology, Oceanography, Climatology and Meteorology, Estate Management, Human Ecology, Photogrammetry, Resource Management, Disaster Management, etc.
- Members of NIS, RTP, Aviation Practitioners, etc.
Registration is by examination and by direct membership into the Associate level of ICGN.
EThe Associate membership of the Institute is awarded to:
- Candidates who have passed all sections of the professional examinations and have satisfied all other requirements laid down by the Institute for the award of an associate.
- After due consideration based on responsibility, experience, education, and training by the council, Directors in Ministries and public parastatals, Chief Executives in the private sectors who are professionally inclined to economic matters and related disciplines may be awarded this category of membership.
- Professors of Geography and Ph.D. holders of Geography. The award of this category of membership entitles the holders to use the abbreviations ACG (Associate Chartered Geographers) after their names. An ACG holder stands a chance of direct entry into any of our universities for an MBA programme.
Election:
The prospective candidates shall satisfy the council by:
- Completing the professional Examinations of ICGN from the foundation to the final stage or from the PI- PIII competency course.
- Currently in related employment (management position or equivalent) for an aggregate of at least five years.
- Willing and able to promote, contribute to, and actively support the objectives of the ICGN, and
- Willing and able to promote and make significant contributions to the development, advancement, and professional practice of the Chartered Geographers.
- Five years of working experience or above for full exemption, but to write a term paper as research work to complement the examinations.
